Ralph “Ricky” Birch served more than 30 years of a 55- year sentence and Shawn Henning was approved probation in2018 Both had been founded guilty in connection with the ruthless Dec. 1, 1985, slaying of 65- year-old Everett Carr.
Henning was 17 when the crime occurred and received probation under brand-new rules for teenage culprits.

” They say the wheels of justice turn gradually,” Birch told The Hartford Courant outside the courtroom. “That’s a little bit of an understatement. It feels excellent. It’s been a long time coming.”
No DNA proof was discovered in the bloody crime scene to connect the pair to the murder, said Andrew O’Shea, Birch’s attorney. Carr, a New Milford local, was stabbed 27 times, had his throat cut and suffered blows to the head. Regardless of being determined as suspects shortly after the criminal activity, no blood was found on their clothing or in their car.

They were convicted in part based upon testament from world-famous forensic specialist Henry Lee, who gained partial popularity during the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Lee testified that was possible for the killers to avoid getting blood on them.
He likewise stated a towel found in the restroom near the crime scene with spots believed to be blood might have been touched by the killers while cleaning up. Later tests exposed the discolorations were not blood.
Prosecutors stated they decreased to retry the guys because witnesses have either passed away or recanted their stories which retested evidence stopped working to tie them to the murder.
