TORONTO– BlackBerry Ltd. is teaming up with start-up OnwardMobility for a brand-new 5G variation of the mobile phone with the physical keyboard and boosted security that once made the Waterloo, Ont. company’s devices common.

The strategies were revealed jointly by BlackBerry along with the Austin, Tex.-based OnwardMobility and by FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Taipei-based Foxconn that has been Apple Inc.’s primary iPhone maker for many years. The gadgets will be available next year, the business said.

” BlackBerry smartphones are known for protecting interactions, privacy, and information,” OnwardMobility CEO Peter Franklin stated in a statement. “This is an incredible chance for OnwardMobility to bring next-generation 5G gadgets to market.”

The new collaboration comes as the United States imposes significantly tough limitations on China-based innovation business, consisting of Huawei Technologies, creating a tense situation between the world’s 2 biggest economies.

Franklin said in an interview prior to the announcement that he believes there is support for increased cybersecurity from both significant U.S. political parties, along with business and a growing variety of customers.

” I believe it’s a universal concern, especially in today’s danger landscape _ increased dangers, a great deal of people working from house. Security matters more and more and that’s clear as we look throughout nations and the global landscape.”

The business have actually not said where FIH will make the BlackBerrys or provided details of the phone’s features, other than that it will use a variation of the Android os that BlackBerry adopted to change its BlackBerry 10 operating system.

” All I can share is that our vision is to be as North American made as possible,” Franklin said.

The most current models of the BlackBerry _ consisting of the Key2 and KeyOne, which are offered in Canada _ were produced by TCL Communication, a subsidiary of TCL Interaction Innovation Holdings Ltd. of Hong Kong.

BlackBerry announced in February that it would end a 2016 licensing and innovation support agreement with TCL as of Aug. 31.

” BlackBerry is delighted OnwardMobility will provide a BlackBerry 5G smartphone gadget with physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand name,” BlackBerry president John Chen said in the joint statement.

” We are excited that clients will experience the business and federal government level security and mobile productivity the brand-new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will provide.”

Franklin stated OnwardMobility approached BlackBerry late last year with the prospect of coordinating with FIH.

A biography offered by OnwardMobility says that Franklin has more than 15 years experience “rebuilding” technology companies, including deal with Microsoft and Zynga.
