There are completely good star design moments, and then there are the appearances that truly stick to you, the ones you try desperately to recreate in the house. In ‘ Great Clothing in Style History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Recalling at the history of Janelle Monáe‘s red carpet appearances, it’s exceptional how constant the entertainer’s visual has actually remained over time. While the rest of us have been trying out an entire host of trends that leave us wincing at images of ourselves simply a few years later on, Monáe’s ruthless commitment to accurate tailoring in black and white ways photos of her from over a years ago still feel pertinent.
Among my favorite Monáe looks, however, is a fairly easy one in all black. For the Vanity Fair Oscars after celebration in 2017, Monáe altered from the wonderfully floaty Elie Saab dress she wore to the primary event into something with a bit more edge: a voluminously skirted black ballgown by Alexandre Vauthier, total with mesh underlay.
There are many aspects of this look worth keeping in mind, from the mixed-metal accessories (think big silvery rings and a black-and-gold clutch) to the peekaboo folds of the gown to Monáe’s relatively suppressed makeup. But the genuine kicker for me is the mesh top, which feels all of a sudden punk and contrasts perfectly with the princess-y shape of the gown and the fairy-like gold floral headband by Jennifer Behr
It’s the kind of attire that’s simple to envision riffing on even if you’re not a chart-topping musician, so next time you’re headed to an elegant event (when those are happening once again), consider wearing a little bit of mesh under an elegant black dress and see what magic happens as an outcome.
