  • Facebook is turning to a group of part-time “neighborhood reviewers” to assist in its battle against false information.
  • The customers are professionals charged with identifying dubious-looking material, researching it, and after that running it up the chain to Facebook’s partnered fact-checkers.
  • Facebook said it had actually dealt with YouGov to ensure the new customers showed a set of “varied viewpoints.”

Facebook is trying to bolster its fact-checking efforts with a group of part-time “neighborhood reviewers.”

According to a company post, the new group of reviewers will not be fact-checkers themselves but rather will be in charge of looking into and flagging content that looks dubious to Facebook’s fact-checking partners.

” For instance, if there is a post declaring that a celebrity has actually passed away and neighborhood reviewers don’t find any other sources reporting that news– or see a report that the same star is carrying out later that day– they can flag that the claim isn’t proven,” the Facebook item supervisor Henry Silverman composed in the post. “Fact-checkers will then see this info as they evaluate and rank the post.”

These community reviewers will be part-time professionals recruited through a third-party partner called Appen. The new system with contracted workers is a pilot, and Facebook states it will “closely examine” their work over the next few months.

Facebook has come under fire recently for its refusal to fact-check political ads, and there’s no sign in the post whether these community reviewers will evaluate such content. Facebook did not right away respond to a demand for comment.

Silverman also announced that the company had actually worked together with YouGov to ensure a diverse swimming pool of customers with “diverse perspectives,” consisting of with regard to political ideology.

Facebook has actually likewise taken heat from conservative US politicians– including President Donald Trump— who declare the company is inherently biased versus conservatives.
