The United States Navy is to call its new warship after a black sailor who fought in The second world war.

Doris Miller made the Navy Cross for his actions throughout the Japanese attack on Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor in 1941.

At the time, the United States armed force was strictly segregated on racial grounds. Miller became an icon for black Americans in the conflict.

Calling the ship after the heroic sailor comes more than 78 years after the events that made his name.

It will be the very first time a carrier has been named after an African American. Previously, they have actually been called after well-known fights, military leaders and United States presidents.

The main announcement is scheduled for Monday – Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday – at Pearl Harbor. The bay is the website of a huge United States naval station and the base of the nation’s Pacific Fleet.

” It wasn’t hard. I simply pulled the trigger and she worked fine,” he stated afterwards, according to the Naval History and Heritage Command site

” I think I got among those [Japanese] planes. They were diving quite near to us.”

He fired up until he ran out of ammo, before helping his injured shipmates. He abandoned ship with the survivors as the West Virginia sank to the bottom of the harbour.

In January 1942, the US Navy revealed a list of commendations for US servicemen on Pearl Harbor – including one for an unnamed black male.

2 months later, the Pittsburgh Courier revealed the sailor to be Doris Miller. “No longer is his name unidentified,” the report read.

Not Long After, a senator and a congressman introduced different bills in both homes of Congress requiring Miller to get the Medal of Honor – the highest military honour in the US. African American rights groups likewise campaigned for Miller to get an award for his actions, while the media hailed him as one of the “very first United States heroes” of the war.

Other groups nevertheless campaigned against any acknowledgment for Miller on the grounds of his race.

In May that year, President Franklin Roosevelt ignored the debate and awarded him the Navy Cross – at the time the third greatest honour granted by the United States Navy.
