When 21- year-old Payal Kumari topped the Bachelor’s Degree Archaeology and History test at Mahatma Gandhi University last week, it would have been a proud moment for her daddy– a school dropout who migrated to Kerala from Bihar 23 years back.
The daughter of Pramod Kumar and Bindu Devi has come a long way from her days as the odd-girl-out in a Malayam-medium school to earning kudos from the Kerala Chief Minister himself.
” I wish to tell children in my moms and dads’ village– Gosaiymati in Sheikhpura district– about my hardworking days. I wish to motivate them to pursue studies. Likewise, this would be a great spirits booster for ratings of peers from migrant families settled in Kerala,” stated Payal.
On her mind now are greater research studies at JNU and the civil service assessment. “I want to sign up with a PG course at JNU or any other premier institute in the country. I desire to become a federal government employee to serve common people. Civil service exam is also in my ideas,” she said. Payal and household’s story is not too various from that of other migrants, understood as “guest workers”, who have actually been making sure that their wards are educated in Kerala’s schools and colleges. And in a state struggling to fill its school benches in the middle of a low birth rate, these kids of migrant workers have been invited warmly.
Payal’s daddy Pramod, 47, very first boarded a train to Kerala in 1997, when migrants from north Indian states were simply trickling in. He landed a job as an assistant at a sanitaryware store in Kochi, where, every early morning and evening, he would see schoolchildren in their uniforms.
In 2001, he brought his household to Kochi and, one by one, admitted his 3 children to school.
” I had actually been inspired by the importance of education given by Kerala moms and dads. When I decided to bring my family to Kochi, my sole objective was to guarantee education for our 3 kids. Those were really hard days as I was the sole breadwinner with a monthly earnings of Rs 1,500,” said Kumar. He now earns Rs 17,000 as a salesman in a paint dealership’s outlet.
Payal, too, had her battles. “It had been really difficult to learn Malayalam in the initial days. Nobody was at house to clear doubts of classes. However teachers helped. At first, I had actually not been great at research studies. But, I slowly selected up over years to become a rank-holder in the degree course,” she said.

As her daddy struggled to run a household with meagre income, her school and college instructors stepped in. “While in school, teachers assisted me financially as my father might not satisfy all costs. Later on, at Marthoma Women’s College in Perumbavoor, where I did my degree course, the instructors and management assisted to satisfy the monetary needs. In my very first year, a teacher, Lisy Kurian, bore the whole cost and likewise offered pocket money also,” she stated.
On Saturday, CM Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted: “Spoke to Payal Kumari. She is the topper of this year’s Bachelor’s Degree Archeology & History examinations of MG university. What makes her success special is the reality her moms and dads are guest workers. This refers pride for our State. Congratulations Payal.”
